How to Impress Your Boss as a Recruiter: Be Personable
That’s right, be personable — not only to your boss and coworkers, but to your clients, too. In my office, I’ve heard several of our recruiters happily discuss all sorts of information with clients on the phone. While I cannot hear what the clients have to say, I’m always blown away by the personable qualities our recruiters — they’re patient, calm, reassuring, informative, and customer-service-oriented. Instantly, I can tell that they are on the line for you. If you have a question, they listen, and then try and solve it with their wealth of information. By being personable, you’ll not only keep the clients you have, you’ll have a much stronger chance of growing your client base — and that’s something your boss can certainly appreciate.
How to Impress Your Boss as a Recruiter: Know Your Business
For Raytheon employee and university recruiter Angela Yee, knowing about her company before she attends an on-campus recruiting session helps immensely. Her suggestion for fellow recruiters? ''Take some time to read the facts about your company, the overall mission, and [the] various products and services that your company provides. How big is your company? How many employees does the company have? Where are its locations? What career and growth opportunities are there?'' That way, when students approach you with questions, you won’t have to refer to a book. Because you’ve been studying up on your company, you’ll be prepared to answer all types of questions, which will not only make you appear knowledgeable to the student but will allow you to be a good representative of your company, as well.
According to Neitham, ''A good recruiter must have a good grasp of the things that are happening around her. She must have good knowledge about the market, the domain/industry, technology, the client, the job, etc. She must also act as an information storehouse.''
The more you know, the better. This means less confused clients, less company problems, and ultimately, a more appreciative boss.
How to Impress Your Boss as a Recruiter: Be Persistent
According to Guy Kawasaki, a Recruiting.com Post of the Week blogger, you should ''use all your weapons [as a recruiter]. Once you’ve found the perfect candidate, use all the weapons at your disposal to land her — not just salary and options. More important — and more telling — is the attractiveness of your vision for how you’ll change the world and the other employees…To this armory, add your board of directors and advisors, who should use their sway to sign her up. And finally, throw in the resume-building potential of working for a great organization like yours (let’s not be naive, here). Once you decide you want a person, pull out all stops and go with shock and awe to land her.''
This shows that you’re driven for the company, that you want the company to thrive and grow, and that you want your boss to succeed.
